Medicare in Texas

According to the Census Bureau, Texas is among the three states that will account for nearly one-half of the country's total population growth between 2000 and 2030. The current population of Texas is over 25 million residents. As the second most populated state, Texas is not only home to one of the largest senior populations in the country, but the Texas Medicare program also ranks third in the number of enrollees.

In 2012, there will be a significantly lower number of Medicare stand-alone prescription drug plans in Texas. Texas will now offer 33 Medicare Part D plans from 15 different organizations with the lowest Texas Part D premium being $15.10 and the highest Part D premium in Texas being $104.30. This is due to regulation that got rid of plans in Texas that were either duplicative or had low enrollment.

Some Texas residents lived close enough to the poverty line for eligibility into the Texas Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy program. For Low-Income Subsidy eligible individuals in 2012, there are only 13 Medicare Part D plans available in Texas that are Low Income Subsidy eligible. Eligible Texas Medicare beneficiaries can choose based on their own medical and prescription coverage needs.
